How We Began

History

Our company history goes back to the mid 1980’s. Dr. Nick Whitehead opened the first Oxford Learning Center in London, Ontario, Canada. He offered remedial and enrichment programs to elementary and secondary students.

His focus was on basic tutoring and was successful helping students pass tests. But he soon realized that they were not giving students lifelong learning skills, and motivation to excel at learning.

By utilizing his doctorate in Epistemology (the study of learning), he assembled a team of education experts to create a unique learning program based on research into how children fundamentally learn.

They first developed the Dynamic Diagnostic Assessment, a proprietary evaluation that identifies a child’s capacity to learn. They then began to create a curriculum to help children think better and to integrate information more effectively.

In 1994, Nick began franchising his concept with a broader curriculum and an expanded enrollment that included preschoolers and secondary students.

Today, Oxford Learning/GradePower Learning is the foremost provider of supplemental education with more than 140 centers across the U.S., Canada, the Bahamas and Bermuda serving one million students with a unique array of educational programs. “Our children actively participate in the learning process, which enhances their cognitive ability to absorb, integrate and process information,” adds Nick.

You have the opportunity to make a difference in children’s lives and in your community.
