Fight High School Frustration With These Tips

What causes high school frustration for teens? Most students will encounter feelings of frustration or lack of motivation at one point or another in high school. Whether they are freshmen dealing with high school transition or seniors preparing for college next year, most students report feeling that high school is challenging.

Find out what the worst things about high school are (according to the students) and what you can do to help your child overcome them.

The 5 Most Frustrating Things About Being A High School Student (And How To Handle Them)

  1. Learning Things You “Won’t Need” In Real Life. For many students, it can feel like what they are learning in class won’t help them outside of school. It’ important to connect school learning to real-life situations. But even if the subject matter is disinteresting, students are still learning skills they will need in life, such as how to manage their time, take notes, and pay attention, even while being disinterested.
  2. Trying To Meet High Expectations.Expectations to get good grades in high school can lead to a lot of stress and frustration about tests, assignments, ACT/SAT scores, and college applications. Rather than meeting a big goal all once, students should aim to make incremental steps toward a goal. Breaking big tasks into smaller parts reduces stress and help keep teens on track.
  3. The Amount Of Homework. And after spending a full day in class, it’s frustrating to come home to spend more time on schoolwork. Help your child better manage homework time with an agenda.
  4. Getting Involved In Extracurriculars Taking part in extracurriculars during high school can make college applications stand out. But taking on these activities means students have less time for homework and studying.  Help your teen avoid overscheduling by sticking to one or two extracurriculars that they truly enjoy. Encourage your child to create a schedule so he or she can plan time for extracurriculars, schoolwork, and relaxation time.
  5. Sitting Through Boring Classes: While students do have some choice in what classes they take throughout high school, some students might find that they aren’t interested in some of the classes they take. Not every subject will be interesting every time—learning to identify this and persevere despite boredom will serve students well.
