Learning to set goals that students can stick to is not as simple as you may think. Setting clear, achievable, and measurable goals is a vital part of achieving success in school. When students set goals they can stick to, they are better able to reach their full potential. Learning to set goals the right way helps students improve their marks on assignments, get better grades, and boost their motivation and self-confidence.

5 Tips to Set Goals Your Kids Can Stick To

Follow these five tips to help your child set goals both in school and at home:

  1. Set Cam Goals. Follow the CAM rule when setting any goal; ensure that the goal is stated clearly, and is achievable, and measurable.
Avoid vague goal statements such as, “I want better math grades.” CAM goals use specific language: “I want to get 80% in math by the end of the term.” Next, outline how to achieve this goal and then track progress.
  2. Write Every Goal Down. Students who write their goals down and outline the steps to reach them are 42% more likely to achieve those goals. Use an agenda, a whiteboard, or a calendar to write out goals and be sure to include timelines!
  3. Talk About Your Goals. While goals can be personal, talking with children about why setting goals matters is a big part of helping children take ownership of what they want to achieve in life and school.
  4. Check-in Frequently. Tracking progress at regular intervals is a crucial step in helping stay on track with goals Checking-in is a great way to keep the momentum moving forward and helps let you know when you’ve reached the original goal and that it’s time to set a new one.
  5. Celebrate all the Milestones. There are many successes to be celebrated as students work toward a goal. Whether it’s the first time they got an A on a spelling test or the first time they finished a project before a deadline, celebrating the small victories is a great way to keep students motivated to stay on track with their goals.

Set Goals for Success in School and in Life

While goals differ depending on your child’s age, strengths, and aspirations, learning to set goals is key to helping your child reach their fullest potential at school.

Knowing why goal setting is essential helps students achieve the success they want in life and allows students to understand that achieving what they want is possible with the right effort and planning.
